Croft's
Cocoa, Nadja Caramels (Issued circa. 1910)
The poses
found in this set are identical to ones used in E101/E102 and
E106.
Though the
same poses are used for all 4 of the different brands found
on the backs. Dockman & Sons are the most common brand name
found but have only been found with 40 different player/poses.
Some collectors collect
all the brands as one set. Others, like myself, feel they are
4 different sets and collect them as such.
Of the 10
poses not found with Dockman backs, 6 are Philadelphia players.
Dockman & Sons was from Baltimore, Croft's & Allen and
Montague & Co. (Croft's Cocoa) are from Philadelphia so
it isn't surprising they would want more players from that area.
Considering
the company locations, I can understnad why Dockman might pass
on the extra philadelphia players but why wouldn't Dockman include
Ty Cobb with it's set or even Eddie Collins? Any and all opinions
are welcome.
Of the 12
St. Louis players found only with Nadja backs, most are discoveries
made during the 1970s - early 1990s. Oddly there is one St.
Louis player (O'Hara) found with all 4 different brands. All
of the St. Louis players that are only found with Nadja backs
they use the same poses found in the E90.1 set. They are easy
to find in the E90.1 set. There are 4 other St. Louis players
found in the E90.1 set that could possibly be found with a Nadja
back, since Nadja is a Missouri company - Bliss, Criger, Demmitt,
and Willis.
It has been
my experience that of the 40 poses found with Dockman backs
the second half of the players/poses (Lajoie to Zimmerman) were
a little easier to find for me then the first 20 player/poses.
This experience has held true for Croft's & Allen and Croft's
Cocoa brands as well. Coincidence?
|
The checklists:
I have color
coded the brands for the checklist. Spots where names are missing
indicated that player is unknown with that brand advertised
on the back.

I have not seen
a great deal on Dockman & Sons, Croft's & Allen, Nadja Caramels,
or Croft's Cocoa products. One item I am glad to own is the item below.
Recognize it? Take a second look at the back of the Croft's Cocoa cards:
When I first
bought the jar I thought maybe the cards came inside. This doesn't look
to be the case as cards that are cut to the standard e-size (1.5"
X 2/75") won't fit in the opening at the top of the jar.
